The open water swim was started in 1994 in honor of Masters
swimmer Steve Omi's life. Steve passed away from cancer one month
before his 37th birthday. He was well liked and respected by his
fellow swimmers. He was an inspiration in life and throughout his
battle with cancer his strength and fortitude was the impetus for
starting a scholarship fund to honor his memory.
This open water swim is a fundraiser for a scholarship to be
awarded to a local graduating senior planning to swim at the
collegiate level. The recipient is not necessarily the fastest
swimmer. Preference is given to a senior that has shown dedication
to swimming and been an inspiration to other swimmers. Our desire
is to acknowledge a student that treats others with respect, provides
a role model, and takes a positive approach to life. These traits
represented Steve Omis character.
The money raised from the event goes for actual costs and to
the scholarship fund.
